Located in the heart of Beijing, the Baochao Hutong is a testament to the city's rich history. However, Daga Architects have breathed new life into this traditional space, creating the Invisible Yard. Utilizing mirror glass on the ground and walls, the architects have crafted a unique reflective environment that brings the surrounding hutongs, trees, and sky into the yard itself, offering a dream-like spatial experience.
The Invisible Yard is a mere 12 square meters in size, yet the use of mirror glass creates an illusion of spaciousness. As one steps into the yard, they are surrounded by a perspective effect of specular reflection, offering a double landscape experience. The unique reflectivity of the mirror allows the surrounding environment to be reflected on the ground of the yard, opening up a world of possibilities.
Despite the small size of the courtyard, Daga Architects have managed to overcome the challenge of creating a visually spacious environment. This is achieved through the use of mirror glass on the ground and walls of the yard. The unique reflectivity of the material allows the surrounding hutongs, trees, and sky to be reflected on the ground of the yard, creating an interaction between virtual and reality.
Not only is the Invisible Yard a marvel of design, but it also holds a personal significance for the owner. Having lived with her grandparents in the hutong as a child, the renovation aimed to create a living space suitable for modern lifestyle while preserving the memories of the past. The result is a space that is both functional and deeply meaningful.
The Invisible Yard has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and the Invisible Yard certainly fits the bill. With its unique blend of traditional and modern elements, the Invisible Yard is a testament to the creative prowess of Daga Architects.
In conclusion, the Invisible Yard by Daga Architects is a revolutionary design that transforms a traditional Beijing hutong into a modern, reflective space. By blurring the boundaries between reality and illusion, the architects have created a unique spatial experience that is both visually stunning and deeply meaningful. The Invisible Yard is a testament to the power of innovative design and its ability to breathe new life into traditional spaces.
